Backflow Assembly Tester
Certification Program
Apply for a BAT Certification Examination
The Washington State Backflow Assembly Tester (BAT)
certification examination consists of two parts. Applicants
must pass both the practical examination administered by
Washington Certification Services and the computer-based
examination administered by AMP to become certified as a
BAT.
Who is Eligible to Apply for BAT Certification
You are eligible to apply:
- If you have a high school diploma or GED. If you
have less than 12 years of education contact WCS for
information about eligible substitutions.
- If you are not already certified as
a BAT in Washington.
- Once you have received notification that you
did not pass a previous BAT certification
practical examination.
Exam rates are increasing to $225 starting July 24th. If your registration is processed before then you can pay the current rate ($200).
Note: we don't have an automated system so processing can take up to 10 business days.
This means exams posted on our website aren’t always showing real-time availability.
We do everything we can to ensure what's listed is as current as possible and process applications on a
first-come-first-served basis.
- Select a date and location from the
BAT
certification examination schedule.
- Complete and submit the online BAT Certification
Examination Application by the published deadline
date.
- Pay the $200 fee with a debit or credit card.
- Eligible applicants will be scheduled for a
one-hour appointment to take the BAT practical
(hands-on) examination. Appointments are typically
scheduled between 7:30 AM and 5:00 PM and will be assigned in
the order applications are received.

BAT
Certification Examination
Fact Sheet.
An online application and payment must be submitted by the published application deadline date. Space is limited and
applications are accepted on a first-received basis. Examinations
may be full prior to the application deadline and may be cancelled
due to low enrollment.
Examination fees for eligible applicants are non refundable and may
not be transferred to a different applicant. The fee will be
returned only if the applicant is not eligible for the examination
or if Washington Certification Services cancels the examination. Examinations
may be cancelled due to low enrollment.
If an applicant
arrives for the examination appointment more than fifteen minutes
late there may not be enough time to conduct the examination. In
that case the applicant will be required to apply for another
examination and pay all applicable fees.
After an applicant is approved and scheduled for the practical examination, one
voluntary
transfer to a different examination date/location is
allowed at no cost to the applicant.
- Washington Certification Services must receive the
transfer
request by the published application deadline date.
- The next
examination must be completed no later than six months from the
original examination date.
After one voluntary transfer, no additional transfer requests will be accepted.
An applicant will
forfeit the examination fee if:
- The
transfer examination is not completed within the specific time
period.
- The applicant transfers to another examination but cannot
complete that examination for any reason.
Applicants will receive an email confirming our receipt of
the online application and payment, usually within five business days. About
two business days after the published application deadline date,
applicants will receive an email with the examination
appointment time and links to helpful online
information such as:
- Directions to the facility.
- Examination procedures.
- Study references.
Email addresses must be provided on the examination application.
Applicants should add
batnews@greenriver.edu to their safe sender list to ensure
receipt of confirmations and other important certification
information.
